How does a dentist treat a gum infection?

I have a really bad gum infection on a wisdom tooth. My teeth are fine and healthy as I see a dentist every six months so I think it’s just from a bit of food stuck in there rather than an underlying problem.

Other than antibiotics, what will the dentist do? Do they lance the gum or anything first?
Edit: he won't pull them out as he says they're fine, just a little crowded.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm 28.

try listerine every day !! really can help

they just show you how to encourage your gums to be healthy, i got given some mouthwash and some little brushes that you use to clean under the edge of the gum
dont think there would be any lancing involved, so dont worry

They’ll probably just give you antibiotics first. That should clear it. If it doesn’t they’ll x-ray it and you might need treatment. I’ve had the same trouble with wisdom teeth. ‘Orrible innit!

they check what is the origin of the infection and how serious it is . they clean the infection site by removing abscess.

If it is truly only effecting that one wisdom tooth, it may not be a gum infection but more a “tooth infection” Your dds will take x-rays to make sure you dont have an abscess at the root of the tooth (wich is caused by decay reaching the nerve) or there may be some other anomaly under the skin that you cant see. Since it is a wisdom tooth you dds may recommend an extraction rather than a restoration, but that is totaly up to you. If its a hygiene issue, get ready to hear a speech about proper brushing technique!

It is actually called pericorinitis, it’s when the gum surrounding ur wisdom teeth or any other teeth become inflammed or swollen.
I usually clean the area and encourage the patient to clean it properly every after meal, make sure there are no food debris trapped inside the gums.
If the infection keeps on coming back, I cut and carve the area of the gums that is prone in entrapping food debris.
    How old are u btw?
